De labyrintho

De labyrintho canta la polifonia sacra del Rinascimento, la musica che più di ogni altra ha legato la propria esistenza al cantare, atto unico in cui convergevano creatività, tecnica, mestiere e spiritualità.
Da questi stessi elementi il gruppo trae la propria ispirazione artistica.
Fondato nel 2001, De labyrintho si è da subito segnalato per la specificità delle scelte interpretative, alla base delle quali c’è il percepire la Musica come risultato quintessenziale di suono, parola, pensiero e simbolo.
Il suono inteso come vettore anche di significati profondi, rapporto con il testo cantato, e conseguente adesione agli aspetti spirituali, ricerca espressiva e partecipazione emotiva, attenzione alle caratteristiche tecniche ed espressive dei singoli autori cantati, rendono esperienze particolari le esecuzioni dal vivo del gruppo.
Unanime consenso ha ricevuto l’attività discografica del gruppo (quattro dischi premiati come Disco del Mese dalla rivista Amadeus, premi “Disco del mese” su riviste inglesi, tedesche, portoghesi, spagnole e statunitensi, 5 Stelle Classics Voice, 5 Stelle Musica, 10 Cd Classic, tre volte premiati con i 5 Diapason dall’omonima rivista francese) e tra essi spiccano il Premio Amadeus 2008 per il miglior disco dell’anno per la registrazione delle Prophetiæ Sibyllarum di Orlando di Lasso, la segnalazione ai prestigiosi Klaraprijzen della radio di stato belga nel 2007 e il Gramophone Critic’s Choice nel 2004. De labyrintho è stato inoltre incluso, unico gruppo vocale, nel disco che raccoglie il meglio di sessanta edizioni di Musica e Poesia a San Maurizio, il più prestigioso festival italiano di Musica Antica, a fianco di musicisti come Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen e Jordi Savall.
Dufay, Obrecht, Lasso, Palestrina, Victoria, Gesualdo sono alcuni degli autori sui quali maggiormente si è concentrata l’attenzione del gruppo, su tutti però svetta Josquin Desprez, il grande maestro del Rinascimento, che De labyrintho ha eletto a nume tutelare fin dalla sua formazione. Invitato dalla Roosevelt Academy dell’Università di Utrecht a tenere il concerto di chiusura del Festival Symposium Josquin & the Sublime a Middelsburg, il gruppo è stato definito “la compagine oggi più esperta al mondo nel cavare dalle note di Josquin Desprez quella musica così sublime, struggente, intimamente umanista, che lo fece paragonare a Michelangelo e Raffaello”.
De labyrintho è stato protagonista anche di trasmissioni tv (Come un’alma rapita di Sandro Cappelletto su Rai 5, dedicato alla figura di Carlo Gesualdo) e di lungometraggi musicali, quali Dolorosa gioia, su Carlo Gesualdo e Sul nome B.A.C.H., dedicato al grande kantor, entrambi diretti da Francesco Leprino, e Gesualdo nostro contemporaneo di Nino Criscenti. È stato inoltre protagonista della trasmissione di Piero Badaloni in onda su TV 2000, Illustri conosciuti, dedicata a Carlo Gesualdo e ha curato l’esecuzione delle musiche di Noel Bauldeweyn e Jacob Arcadelt contenute nei quadri di Caravaggio per la trasmissione di Rai 5 Dentro Caravaggio di Tomaso Montanari.
Molte le iniziative per celebrare Josquin Desprez nel quinto centenario della morte: ha registrato In principio, raccolta di mottetti intorno al Natale e nel 2021 il programma dedicato alla Missa L’homme arme super voces musicales è stato presentato alla Fondazione Pietà dei Turchini a Napoli per la giornata europea della musica antica e successivamente eseguito al Festival dell’Ascensione a Milano, concerto quest’ultimo che è diventato poi il disco live Sublime ingegno, disco che ha aperto la collaborazione del gruppo con l’etichetta discografica NovAntiqua. Parte del concerto è stata poi centrale nel film Josquin Desprez: l’anima del suono, di Sol Capasso. De labyrintho è anche apparso in video e in suono in Il padrone delle note – Josquin Desprez, lungometraggio di Marco Zarrelli, cantando dalla cantoria della Cappella Sistina. Sempre in onore di Josquin e ancora all’interno della Sistina, De labyrintho è stato protagonista di Josquin Desprez, il padrone delle note: video concerto, trasmesso poi da Classica Hd, con il quale lo Stato Città del Vaticano ha voluto ricordare il grande compositore. Nel 2023 De labyrintho costruisce Umbra, un nuovo particolare programma nel quale accosta i Responsori di Carlo Gesualdo alla narrazione che Sandro Cappelletto ha tratto dal Vangelo secondo Gesù di José Saramago. Il commovente concerto al Festival dell’Ascensione a Milano, rappresenta forse una delle vette artistiche del gruppo. È invece Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, nel quinto centenario della nascita, il protagonista del 2025 dell’ensemble, con diverse e profonde esecuzioni del Canticum Canticorum, culminate nell’inaugurazione della stagione dell’Accademia Filarmonica Romana al Teatro Argentina, concerto nel quale il Cantico palestriniano è stato accostato a brani sullo stesso testo composti da Francesco Leineri per voci, live elettronica, violoncello, fisarmonica e percussioni, in un unicum di grande ricchezza sonora.
Nell’aprile del 2026, presso il Teatro del Maggio Fiorentino, l’attività di De labyrintho è stata premiata dall’Associazione Nazionale dei Critici Musicali con il prestigioso Premio Franco Abbiati 2026.

De labyrintho performs the sacred Polyphony of the Renaissance, the music that more than any other owed its existence to singing as a unique act in which creativity, technique, craft, and spirituality converged.
The group draws its artistic inspiration from these same elements.
Founded in 2001, De Labyrintho immediately stood out for the distinctness of its interpretive choices based on the perception of Music as the quintessential outcome of sound, word, thought, and symbol.
The idea of music as carrier of deeper meanings, the focus on the relationship between sound and text, and the consequent adherence to the spiritual aspects of music, the search for expression and emotional participation, attention to the different technical and expressive characteristics of the composers, these and other features make the ensemble’s live performances a unique experience.
The ensemble’s recordings have received unanimous praise: four albums awarded ‘Album of the Month’ by Amadeus magazine, as well as several ‘album of the month’ awards from magazines in the UK, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the US; also received 5 Stars on Classics Voice, 5 Stars Music, 10 Cd Classic, three 5 Diapasons from the eponymous French magazine; most important of all: the Amadeus Award for the best album of the year, 2008 (for Prophetiæ Sibyllarum by Orlando di Lasso); finally, a special mention in the prestigious Klaraprijzen of Belgian State Radio in 2007, and Gramophone Critic’s Choice in 2004.
De Labyrintho was the only vocal ensemble to have a performance included in the album collecting the best of sixty editions of Musica e Poesia a San Maurizio, the most prestigious early music festival in Italy, along side performances by musicians such as Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen and Jordi Savall.
While Dufay, Obrecht, Lasso, Palestrina, Victoria, and Gesualdo are among the composers the group has focused on, above all of them stands the great renaissance master Josquin Desprez, chosen from the beginning as the ensemble’s patron deity. Invited by the Roosevelt Academy of the University of Utrecht to perform the closing concert of the Symposium Festival Josquin & the Sublime, in Middelsburg, the ensemble was described as “the most expert group in the world in gleaning from the notes of Josquin Desprez that sublime, poignant, intimately humanist music for which he was compared to Michelangelo and Raffaello”.
De Labyrintho has also played a prominent role in various television programs (Come un’alma rapita, by Sandro Cappelletto on Rai 5 on the life of Carlo Gesualdo), and in films such as Dolorosa gioia, also about Carlo Gesualdo, Sul nome B.A.C.H, about the German composer, both directed by Francesco Leprino, and Gesualdo our Contemporary, by Nino Criscenti. The ensemble also played a role in Piero Badaloni’s program on Carlo Gesualdo on TV2000, Illustri conosciuti, and accompanied Caravaggio’s paintings with music by Noel Bauldeweyn and Jacob Arcadelt in the documentary Dentro Caravaggio by Tommaso Montanari on Rai 5. For the five-hundredth anniversary of Josquin’s death, De labyrintho is working on two new recordings, which together with the three albums already recorded at the beginning of the ensemble’s career, aim to offer a more in-depth look at the sacred works by the great Master from Condé.
Many initiatives have been organized to celebrate Josquin Desprez on the fifth centenary of his death: the ensemble recorded In principio, a collection of motets centered on Christmas, and in 2021 the program dedicated to the Missa L’homme armé super voces musicales was presented at the Fondazione Pietà dei Turchini in Naples for the European Day of Early Music, and subsequently performed at the Festival dell’Ascensione in Milan. This latter concert later became the live album Sublime ingegno, which marked the beginning of the group’s collaboration with the record label NovAntiqua. Part of the concert also played a central role in the film Josquin Desprez: l’anima del suono by Sol Capasso.
De labyrintho has also appeared on video and audio in Il padrone delle note – Josquin Desprez, a feature film by Marco Zarrelli, singing from the choir loft of the Sistine Chapel. Again in honor of Josquin, and still within the Sistine Chapel, De labyrintho was featured in Josquin Desprez, il padrone delle note: video concerto, later broadcast on Classica HD, through which the Vatican City State commemorated the great composer.
In 2023, De labyrintho created Umbra, a new and distinctive program that pairs the Responsories of Carlo Gesualdo with a narrative drawn by Sandro Cappelletto from The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by José Saramago. The moving concert at the Festival dell’Ascensione in Milan perhaps represents one of the ensemble’s artistic peaks.
In 2025, the ensemble turned to Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina on the fifth centenary of his birth, with several profound performances of the Canticum Canticorum, culminating in the opening of the season of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana at the Teatro Argentina. In this concert, Palestrina’s Song of Songs was paired with compositions on the same text by Francesco Leineri for voices, live electronics, cello, accordion, and percussion, creating a unique and richly textured sonic experience.
In April 2026, at the Teatro del Maggio Fiorentino, De labyrintho’s activity was honored by the Italian National Association of Music Critics with the prestigious Premio Franco Abbiati 2026.
